Solar Pool Heating

Double the days your pool can be used without running costs

Solar Pool Heating

Increase the value and enjoyment of any outdoor swimming pool by increasing the number of days it can be used, in a clean and efficient way by using solar pool heating systems.

Even when used without a cover, solar pool heating can double the number of swimming pool days per year. This is a very good solution for permanent residents of the Costa Blanca and it is all done with a very clean and renewable method. Solar pool heating will extend the swimming season, and will make it possible to swim from April until October. The system will make the pool water about seven degrees warmer, combined with a pool cover.

How does Solar Pool Heating work?

A solar pool heating system circulates the pool water through polypropylene mats and back into the pool. The temperature of the water is raised significantly as it passes through the mat. To control the the temperature of the pool water, a differential thermostat can determine whether or not additional heat is needed. The system can be integrated with existing filter pumps by the use of a 3-way valve.

Heating and cooling

The system can also be used to cool down the pool during the hot summer months. Under this operating mode, the system will run only at night and refresh the pool water that circulates through the solar mats, when the outside temperature is colder.

1: Solar collector mats

The water that is pumped out of the pool will flow through the solar mats where the water temperature is raised.

2: Valves

By using valves, the solar mats can (optionally) be bypassed in summer, or whenever this is desired.

3: Filter

The water will flow through the filter to clean the pool.

4: Pump

The pump will pump the water through the solar mats and filter.

Solar Pool Heating with Glass collectors

Solar pool heating by glass collectors works a little bit different. The sun will heat up liquid inside a glass collector and this liquid will heat up the pool water through a heat exchanger. This system will extend the swimming season even more than polypropylene mats. On average, the swimming season will be extended by 1 to 2 months more. On average, your swimming pool will be up to 7 degrees warmer, in combination with a pool cover.

When comparing glass collectors with polypropylene mats, there are a couple of advantages and disadvantages. In order to give you an idea of the main differences, we give you the advantages and disadvantages of each system.

Polypropylene mats
  • The ideal position is south facing, but not necessarilyunder an angle. Because the mats absorb heat, the orientation does not necessarily have to be south facing.
  • No maintenance meaning no extra costs
  • Less sensitive to wind than glass collectors
  • No danger of overheating
  • Lower efficiency than glass collectors
  • Needs more m2 of surface area in comparison to glass collectors
Glass collectors
  • Needs less m2 of surface area than polypropylene mats
  • Higher efficiency than polypropylene mats
  • 1 to 2 extra months of swimming
  • Danger of overheating = more components used
  • More components used = more expensive
  • Requires maintenance
  • Have to be aimed at the South exactly
