Electricity production by solar panels works by capturing the sun’s energy to turn it into electricity for your home or business.
Solar panels are considered the most important source of electricity for the 21st century. These systems can easily be integrated into any home or business. They are silent, produce no emissions, have no moving parts and require no fuel other than free sunlight. They are modular, relatively easy to transport and install and have very low maintenance requirements. To explain and give you more information on how solar panel systems work, we must first have a look at the different kinds of systems.

Connected to the power grid
Grid-tied solar panels are connected to the public power grid and do not require battery storage. Any solar power that you generate from a grid-tied system (which is not used directly in your home) is exported onto the power grid.
Unlike the other types of systems (off-grid/hybrid), grid-tied solar systems are not able to supply electricity during blackouts or at night, because there are no batteries used. Batteries can however be added to most grid-tied system at a later stage if required.
Not connected to the power grid
An off-grid system is not connected to the power grid and therefore requires battery storage to use when there is no sunlight. An off-grid solar system must be designed appropriately so that it will generate enough power throughout the year and have enough battery capacity to meet the home’s requirements during the night and during days with little sunlight.
Off-grid systems are more expensive because batteries are relatively expensive.
Connected to the power grid
Hybrid systems are a mix between grid-tied and off-grid systems. Hybrid systems combine solar and battery storage in one and are available in different configurations. These systems can be connected to the power grid but can still take advantage of battery storage. When the electricity in the batteries is depleted, the system will take electricity from the grid.
Hybrid systems are also able to take electricity of the grid in order to charge the batteries. This will be done at night, when taking power will only cost you the night tariff.
